Ooru — Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Ooru ("we", "us", or "the app") handles information when you use our website and mobile application (together, the "Service"). Ooru is a city guide for Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai and Pune that provides information about events (with public transport directions to their venues) and local news, plus a food guide, everyday phrases in the local language and a city guide for each city.

Information We Collect

Ooru is designed to collect as little personal information as possible. We do not require you to create an account to use the app's main features.

• Device location: When you first open Ooru, it asks for access to your device's location so it can show events and news for the city you are in. Your location is used only on your device: it is never sent to our servers or shared. Ooru keeps a rounded copy (accurate to about 1 km) on your device for up to 12 hours so it remembers your city. You can decline or turn off this permission at any time; Ooru then uses approximate location, described below.
• Approximate location to choose your city: If device location is not available, we use general, IP-based location (city level), provided by our hosting provider, to show events and news for your city and to decide which city-specific sections to show. It is kept in your browser for the current session and is not stored on our servers. If you choose a city yourself, that choice is saved only in your browser. This does not identify you personally.
• Usage and device information: Like most websites and apps, our hosting and infrastructure providers may automatically receive standard technical information (such as device type, browser, and IP address) for security and reliability purposes.
• Page analytics: We use Vercel Web Analytics to see how many people visit Ooru and which pages they use, so we can improve it. It does not use cookies. A visit is recognised by a hash of the incoming request that is discarded after 24 hours, and the data collected (such as the page, the referring site, approximate location, device type, operating system and browser) is anonymous and used only in aggregate.

Advertising

Some parts of the Service display advertisements through Google AdSense. Google and its partners may use cookies and similar technologies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to our Service and/or other sites on the Internet.

Third-Party Content and Links

Ooru aggregates publicly available information such as event listings and news headlines, and links out to third-party websites and publishers. When you follow these links, you are subject to the privacy policies of those third parties. Check transit opens Google Maps or Apple Maps with the event's venue filled in as the destination; Ooru does not send them your location, but those apps may use it to plan the route under Google's and Apple's own privacy policies. We are not responsible for the content or privacy practices of external sites.

How We Use Information

• To provide and improve the Service's features, such as event listings, news and content discovery.
• To show events, news and sections relevant to your city.
• To maintain the security, performance, and reliability of the Service.
• To display advertising that helps keep the Service free.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. Information may be processed by trusted infrastructure and advertising providers (such as our hosting provider and Google) solely to operate the Service as described above.

Data Retention

We do not maintain user accounts or personal profiles for general users. Location data used for routing is processed on your device and not retained by us.

Children's Privacy

Ooru is intended for a general audience and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

Your Choices

• You can deny or revoke location permission at any time through your browser or device settings; Ooru then uses approximate location, and you can always choose your city yourself with the city button.
• You can manage advertising preferences through your Google account and device ad settings.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated date.
